Sometimes Simple Is Better

Watching AMC sometimes is like watching someone put a square peg into a round hole.  Everyone knows that Annie’s insane and yet the insanity is that the whole storyline here is everyone proving she is insane.  So who is really insane in this storyline?

Some things just don’t add up.  Like Aidan falling in love with Annie to only now believing she’s crazy and he doesn’t love her.  His “mission” is to put her away forever!  Okay this guy spent almost a year on helping Annie.  He helped her kidnap her daughter, elude the police and saved her from that awful Psychotic Doctor.  And yet now he is all about locking her away forever.  Hmm.

I’m sure that some how we are to believe this s/l will bring Erica and Ryan to the brink of unbridled passion.  How that is going to happen only Chuckie knows but seriously I’m not feeling this couple.  And Erica is coming off as a busy body who has nothing better to do than interfere with everyone else’s life.

Brot and Taylor were a cute couple but now that there are all new storyline arcs in place they broke up.  Boo-Hiss what a cop out!  This to force a storyline with Tad.  Everything seems so over  the top and disjointed.

Compare AMC and Y&R.  Y&R right now offers use of it’s vets all of the time (Victor, Katherine, Paul, Jack, Ashley, etc) these characters are blended quite nicely with the newer members of the cast.  Jack giving his little brother life advice while they wait to see who the father of Sharon’s baby is was amazing and poignant.  Tricia Cast is back as Nina Warner Chancellor and the s/l is amazing.  Tying new s/l with old storyline and it has a bit of a spin.  They re-wrote the past or did they?  They’re storylines are calm and interesting.  Sure they have bumps in the road sometimes (Adam’s Gay? um okay).

AMC has in your face s/l’s that don’t work because to me they seemed forced.  Why do the writers think they need to write so many over the top storylines.  Some of the greatest AMC s/l’s just unfolded.  Tad and Dixie’s love affair came about because Adam was covetous and Dixie was vulnerable.  Ryan and Gillian’s getting together was cute and funny and most important romantic.  What do we have for romance right now.  Randi and Frankie? Marissa and JR (ew)? Ryan and Erica?  None of these pairings work right now.  And what the heck happened to Tad?  I was amazed when he was in a bar declaring that Tad the Cad lived no more.  Tad the Cad hasn’t been around in along time…you know why…because a 50 year old guy isn’t considered a cad…he’s considered a jerk if he behaves like that.  It would have been more profound if they had written Pete to be the new cad in town and Tad guiding him around the mind fields of love.  Instead Tad’s a goof all of the time (sometimes is okay but all of the time???) and Pete, well he’s a wet noodle.

Instead of enlarging the cast how about the writers tackle writing for the characters and not trying to force them into a scene.  Soaps are so much better when it seems effortless.  Look at the 70’s when Soaps had little to no budget.  Simple scenes in the living room or hospital lounge.  Now they have the look of reality in the background but the stories are somewhere in outer space.  Hey Chuck how about you reel that stuff in already!
